What Is “Remember Who You Are”?

“Remember Who You Are” is an overnight spiritual retreat centered on sacred Hapé, intentional prayer, elemental breathwork, nature, music, reflection, and a unique Osain–Ifá–Ewé ceremony.

This is not a party or recreational experience. It is a carefully guided sacred gathering created to help participants become quiet, release distractions, reconnect with nature, and listen more deeply to their inner wisdom.

Throughout the retreat, participants will experience teachings and activities involving:

What Is Hapé?

Hapé—also written Rapé—is a sacred ceremonial preparation traditionally made from finely powdered plants. Many Hapé preparations contain ceremonial tobacco, along with ashes or other botanical ingredients selected according to the tradition and purpose of the blend.

Hapé is traditionally administered through the nostrils using a ceremonial applicator. It is not smoked and is not used recreationally. Within ceremonial traditions, it may be approached as a spiritual tool for prayer, grounding, purification, focus, and connection.

The retreat will include education about Hapé, its ceremonial use, respectful preparation, intention, and integration. Guests should arrive with reverence for the tradition and openness to learning about the medicine.

This retreat is centered on Hapé, so everyone attending should be comfortable being present around its ceremonial use. No participant will be compelled or pressured to receive Hapé. Personal consent will always be respected.

Cultural Context

Tobacco, Community & Sacred Tradition

Museum collections offer a window into the many distinct ways tobacco and snuff have appeared in African social and spiritual life. These histories belong to their own peoples and traditions; they provide cultural context and should not be understood as the origin story of Hapé.

Nguni Smoking Traditions

The Phansi Museum describes pipe smoking among Nguni peoples of South Africa as a collective social practice that may also serve as communication with ancestors. The shapes, carvings, beadwork, and lengths of pipes can distinguish different rituals. Its collection also shows snuff spoons, containers, and tobacco bags as personal objects carrying clan, ceremonial, and social meaning.

A Shona Snuff Container

The Smithsonian records this early-to-mid-20th-century object from Zimbabwe or Mozambique as a spherical snuff container carved from wood, with a reed stopper, incised patterns, and copper details. Its side loop allowed it to be worn around the neck. The museum notes that offering snuff to visitors or sharing it among friends became a widespread social practice after tobacco reached Africa in the 16th century.

What Should I Expect?

You should expect an intentional, spiritually focused environment—not a conventional workshop or social gathering.

Before any ceremony begins, participants will receive guidance about the experience, personal boundaries, consent, breathing, emotional preparation, and what may occur physically or emotionally.

The experience of Hapé varies from person to person. Some people may experience watering eyes, nasal discharge, coughing, sneezing, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, emotional release, or a need to sit quietly. Others may experience a sense of calm, clarity, prayerfulness, grounding, or inward reflection. No particular experience or outcome is guaranteed.

Participants will be supported through preparation, ceremony, rest, reflection, and integration. You will never be required to perform, disclose personal experiences, or participate in a practice without your consent.

The Power of Intention

Intention is the spiritual foundation of this retreat.

An intention is more than a wish. It is a clear inner commitment that gives direction to prayer, ceremony, and personal transformation. Before entering the sacred space, each participant will be invited to consider:

  • ◆What am I ready to release?
  • ◆What truth am I ready to face?
  • ◆What part of myself am I ready to remember?
  • ◆What am I asking the Creator, my Ori, my ancestors, or the sacred forces of nature to help me understand?
  • ◆What will I do differently after receiving that understanding?

Intention does not control the ceremony or guarantee a particular result. It gives the participant a spiritual compass. It helps transform the experience from something that merely happens into something entered with awareness, responsibility, and purpose.

Rev. Natalie Shumake will guide participants through the process of establishing a clear intention. Ajarn Shaman Shu will introduce elemental breathwork, mudras, and spiritual preparation before the ceremony.

Come prepared to be honest with yourself. Come prepared to listen. Come prepared to remember who you are.
